A few days after having visited the impressive and beautiful grave sight of Che Guevara at Santa Clara, our tour guide did an extra with us when in Santiago de Cuba.
We drove by the cemetery Santa Ifigenia to have a look at the mausoleum of José Martí and the changing of the guards.
We were told that Fidel Castro´s wish was to be buried in the shade of (or closeby) the great José Martí.
So, we stood on the side as told, with our group, to watch the changing of the young guards.
While waiting I wandered around and wanted to cross the path leading to the mausoleum where the guards would walk by.
I was denied access to that empty space by the man in my picture. Which was weird, because there was nothing I could do wrong, like a construction site or something not to be stepped on – but space (much for a full graveyard). I did not get an answer to my curious question why that area was off, which was unusual as the people are very friendly and explaining everywhere else.
Later I was told that this was the space designated to be the final resting place for Fidel Castro. Some construction arrangements for the site being already made.
Soon we will see what will happen, after Fidel Castro died last night.
I was deeply impressed by Cuba, where I had wanted to go for many years. Travelled 3.000km across the island and country this year, visiting all colonial cities. I was deeply impressed by the Cubans, being the most friendly population I have ever visited. Once I started to speak Spanish it was simply amazing to meet every single inhabitant. Everyone´s warmth was overwhelming.

My previous desire to return and spend time in Habana for some weeks or even months still exists like before. If I find a task, in the best case a job, e.g. in communication, I will be back.
